Krijn Verwijs supplies high-quality fresh mussels all year round. Thanks to good planning and exclusive partnerships with a strong network of growers in different parts of Northern Europe, the supply is continuous and reliable. Treatment in Krijn Verwijs' modern dilution and purification system guarantees optimum quality and food safety.
Provenance
Krijn Verwijs mussels mostly come from mussel grounds in North-Western Europe: from the Eastern Scheldt to Denmark and from Ireland to Germany. Each region has its own season. The season for Dutch mussels starts in late June/early July and lasts until March/April of the following year. In Denmark, the season for rope-grown mussels begins in March and ends in June. The mussel season in the German Wadden Sea follows on directly from that. And so a whole year goes by.
Cultivation and harvest
Growing mussels is a true craft. It starts with mussel seeds, obtained from fishing or from mussel seed capture systems. After catching or capturing the seed, the mussel grower sows out the small mussels on a cultivation bed, preferably in a sheltered place where the mussel seed can grow undisturbed and not be blown away. The mussels then go to a location with a stronger current, where they benefit from the increased nutrient flow. Krijn Verwijs masters this practice and grows its own mussels in Ireland. In addition, we work with the best growers, who know their craft and adhere to the same high quality standards for their products as we do. They include growers of both seabed and rope-grown mussels.
Processing
Regardless of where the mussels come from, whether from our 'backyard' in the Eastern Scheldt or from further afield, at Krijn Verwijs they are diluted in our modern dilution and purification facility for at least 8 to 24 hours. Here the mussels filter themselves using purified Eastern Scheldt water. This ensures high quality and guaranteed food safety – in short, quality from Yerseke.
Range
In Krijn Verwijs' processing centre, there is also a strong focus on checking and sorting the mussels. That way, only the healthy and flawless mussels remain and you have a choice of different sizes: Extra, Super, Imperial, Jumbo and Gold Label. You'll find them in the brand Premier Premium Quality and as small, medium, large and extra large in Packed by Premier. Of course, it is not just the size of the shell that matters, the weight of the fish is also crucial. A sample is taken from each batch and cooked in our laboratory.
Packing
Depending on your requirements, the mussels are packed in 1 to 2 kg leak-free vacuum packaging or in 5, 10 or 15 kg jute sacks. The leak-free vacuum packaging provides a protected environment for the mussels, which is also good for nature: after use, the boxes in which the mussels are packed can be recycled by presenting them with the recyclable plastics. The top foil needs to be disposed of as general waste.
